Hitman and Far Cry are excellent examples of how to do this the RIGHT way. nothing but occasional notes and audio logs. No cool videos introducing you to each one's background/personality. Then you have the Visionaries, who are so poorly explained and introduced it's ridiculous. She's such a ridiculous caricature, I'm mildly annoyed by her at most. I have no real reason to root for Colt and see him prevail over 'the loop,' nor do I feel any strong resentment towards Julianna, even despite her silly attitude. I don't give a damn about either of them. Colt is as paper-thin a protagonist as they come, and Julianna seems equally shallow: a 'snarky rival' who nags at you over the radio and randomly shows up to shoot at you. I feel no connection whatsoever to Colt or Julianna. The story and characters have been a huge letdown from the very beginning. I consider Prey 2017 to be one of the best immersive sims of all time and although I was a 'late-comer' to Dishonored 2, I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and thought it was an outstanding sequel to a legendary game.ĭeathloop, however, just feels like one big misfire to me. I want to make it clear that I've loved Arkane's work since the original Dishonored. Perhaps the best way to put it is that I don't feel invested in anything-not the storyline, not the characters, not the environments or level design, and not even any of the gameplay systems.
